Trap Ratings & Reviews
- rg9400November 1, 2024Trap is a strange movie to review. The plot actually moves into some interesting territory in the second half, suddenly feeling far more compelling. I legitimately enjoyed seeing the way the story develops into this shift, and there were a few sequences in that latter half that really felt captivating. However, so much of this movie requires turning off your brain. Almost all the actions, from both the police and the killer, seem incredibly illogical. It is not even remotely believable that either side is an expert at what they are doing. Logic simply has no place in this movie. The line delivery and dialogue is so stilted and awkward at times. It is intentional because Josh Hartnett can act, as evidenced by various moments throughout the movie, yet he is baffingly terrible at others, especially in the first half. In fact, a lot of the first half of the movie feels like Shyamalam trying to soft launch his daughter's music career. Yet, it's almost endearing how silly it all is, with my theater laughing throughout the movie in a fun way. Even if it was unintentional, there is a B-movie shlock feeling to the film that makes it entertaining in its ridiculousness. Still, I think there are so many things that could have been executed significantly better to make this movie much stronger, because the concept is actually good. It could have been on the level of Split, but instead it seems destined to be compared to the director's weaker work, even if it is more fun than those movies. At this stage, we should know what to expect from M Night Shyamalam, with his strong movies being the outliers and not the norm. This one had the potential to be that outlier, and though it can feel fun and engaging, it doesn't reach that potential.
- Kevin WardJuly 1, 2025Trap in its best moments is a tense and exhilarating cat and mouse game that reminded me a lot of Brian De Palma’s Snake Eyes. Snake Eyes opens with an incredibly cinematic and dynamic sequence that takes place at a boxing match, but loses much adrenaline once the fight is over and we leave the arena. Such is the case in M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap. The concert portion of the film is beautifully shot, has Cooper (Josh Harnett) improvising several clever escape to avoid the cops closing in on him and even incorporates a De Palma signature split diopter shot. I was even impressed with Saleka’s music (as Lady Raven). Had never heard any of her music before, but I thought the songs had excellent melody, catchy hooks and found myself grooving along with Hartnett on a couple occasions. Nepo baby talk and/or shameless self-promotion aside, I still came away feeling like she has star quality, at least on the musical side. However, once we leave the concert setting, the cat and mouse dynamic really suffers. Each sides chess moves feel much less thought out along the way and the narrative become much more predictable, and lacking in tension. It doesn’t help that a lot of the dialogue is very stilted and unnatural. Harnett is great, and carries the majority of the film. I was disappointed we didn’t get more Hayley Mills. I don’t think she actually interacted with anyone in the film. I was almost more like a voiceover role for her, simply speaking lines over the police radio. Still enjoyable but definitely enjoyed the first half of the film much more than the second half. Mild recommend.
- 匚卂尺ㄥJune 23, 2025Can you have a Thriller Movie with no Jump Scares, No Blood, No Gore or Grotesque but yet you will be glued to the screen for what's going to happen Next, then this is the movie for you! No Cliché scenes and the plot is absolutely fantastic and the actors(especially the protagonist as Cooper has done a tremendous job! All the characters have outdone their part and it is completely immersive and this could happen in this world! Split personality is not a rare phenomenon any more. Everyone is a split in one way or the other(which can only be overcome through Prayers). The devious eyes expressed all the Psychopath and the Fatherly emotions in two completely different levels and it is a stark reality that the people whom we think we have spent our lives for a long time and have shared our woes/happiness in wedlock could be an unrealistic nightmarish individual. In today's world where last days deception is exponentially increasing, we are in for a lot of shocks and surprises surrounding the people whom we think we know very well! The technical aspect, Lady Ravens bold character to encounter a psychopath yet getting the courage to save the family kept me at the edge of the seat. God Bless this cast and crew for no Obscenity and the ending is also befitting. A very intriguing movie and childhood scars can transform a person into a monstrous individual and such characteristics must be dealt with at the early stages before it becomes too Volatile, Violent and Outrageous! Definitely a Great Movie! Loved it!
- ragmondoFebruary 15, 2025If I had to watch this on an flight, I’d still walk out. This film is destined to be one of those “so bad it’s good” films that you must watch with friends and take a shot every time someone does something completely out of character or something just completely infeasible happens . Watch out though as you will have alcohol poisoning within 20 mins. Has Shama ever actually been to a concert ?!
- ayayronApril 6, 2025Lacked a sense of realism or believability, even if this is Shamalamalan
- NewFilmsAnonymousJune 19, 2025Excellent pacing, Hartnett in top form and one of Shyamalan's best. Give us a sequel!
- ladyg58May 14, 2025Worse M. Night S. movie I’ve seen.
- ScottDecember 15, 2024Some notably bad dialog (even for Shyamalan) can’t push me away from how much fun Hartnett is having. Not a good movie but so ludicrous that I couldn’t help but have fun imagining the continuing adventures of Lady Raven in a Knives Out-style cinematic universe where she tours around solving crimes.
- ShmooflixFebruary 2, 2025A complete waste of time. As many Shayamalan's movies. The protagonist is Shayamalan's family, and has the same talent as any chair you have. Please watch any other thing. Your lifetime is limited.
- DJOctober 17, 2024Trap lacks a lot of things, but mainly a gripping story with no sense of suspense despite that being the entire premise of the movie. Unfortauntely, it's a near miss for M. Night who continues to be extremely flakey when it comes to his offerings. Its too bad really, because the idea is good, the execution not so much.
- Bishop DMay 9, 2025God awful!
- Dante Moreira LimaMarch 30, 2025Great entertainment
- MKMarch 1, 2025Although well produced and acted, the true purpose of the movie is to inflict emotional terror and fear at a deep and traumatizing level. Typical Hollywood tripe, making a white father to be the vilest of villains. Don’t waste your time, unless you want to have disturbed dreams and permanently traumatized kids. No redeeming value.
- GoGoJoeFebruary 16, 2025I wish the movie was written differently. The concept was great but the execution was not. I wish the antagonist was the hero leaving the mystery of who is to play out until the end
- RyezooFebruary 4, 2025Great seeing Josh Harnett staring in a movie again, he is fun but ridiculous in this. That is this whole movie to a tee though, unbelievable circumstances, some bad acting, and goofy script sink this movie. Why are 1000s of people walking around while the main act is on, why is the concert in the daytime, and also over in the daytime? I'll end on a positive, the cinematography is great.
