Aleksey Khlamov, a Russian émigré infected with smallpox, infiltrates one of the divisions. He reveals that the Japanese military held him in the so-called "Unit 731," where viral and bacterial weapons were being developed. To verify the fugitive's testimony, a reconnaissance team led by Kravtsov, Rodin, and Chen, a resident in Japan, is sent behind Japanese lines. Colonel Takeshi Tanaguchi, head of the laboratory's security, does everything in his power to prevent Soviet troops from discovering the secret developments.
