- Garrett WilkinsAugust 13, 2026I revisited The Wizard of Oz because it’s still one of my favorite classic films, and every time I watch it, I’m reminded why it became such a permanent part of popular culture. The moment Dorothy steps into Oz still feels like a genuine shift into another world, and the film wastes no time showing why this place is worth getting lost in. Judy Garland gives Dorothy a warmth that’s impossible not to connect with, and her chemistry with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion is a huge part of why their journey still works so well. The music is woven so tightly into the film’s identity that it’s easy to forget how naturally the songs fit into the story. I’ve seen countless films borrow pieces of The Wizard of Oz, but there’s something special about going back to the source and seeing how effortlessly those ideas were born. What helps the film age so well is how simply and confidently the story is told. The shift from Kansas into the bright colors of Oz was ahead of its time, and the production design gives the whole world a personality that still feels distinct. It’s almost funny how much filmmaking has changed since then, especially when you learn that the “snow” falling over Dorothy and her friends in the poppy field was reportedly asbestos. Somehow that ends up feeling like just one more strange bit of history attached to a movie that seems so innocent on the surface. Nearly ninety years later, The Wizard of Oz remains charming because it never tries to convince you that Oz is real. For a couple of hours, it simply makes you want to believe it is.

Everything from the cast, production, music/scores/lyrics are all achieved beyond expectations that even today many are enthralled and mystified with this very iconic film. If you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favour and do so asap. Go, right now! Then when you’re done, watch the Tom & Jerry’s takes to this which imho, the only one that did this film justice.
