Alex, a burned out LA cyborg cop, is forced by commissioner Farnsworth to find his former cyborg partner and lover Jared who's about to deliver sensitive data to cyborg terrorists who wish to wage war against humans. Is he being played?
- The DOP did good work, and there is some fruitful use of locations, but the acting, overdubbing, and script might actually be worse than *The Room*, but with more rampantly vicious misogyny. I like 'hot chicks with guns' as much as the next guy, but I swear... almost every single actress in this film is fetishized before then being brutally murdered, and usually by the protagonist himself. It's like watching all of Paul Verhoven's worst impulses as an entire film. Anybody who views this without an ounce of self-awareness and rates it highly is not only being dishonest given how objectively and comically awful it is as a film in several respects, but I would go out of my way to avoid them. It has some nice lighting and closeups, though. The action is amusingly indulgent and well storyboarded in the beginning, but it becomes tiringly and lazily unbelievable by the point that they show a whole rifle cartridge being fired into a warehouse as a bomb. Up until that point, I'd just brushed it off as "miniaturized explosive bullets fired out of MP5s. Sure, whatever", but when they actually tried to _show_ them they completely messed it up. Nevertheless, there are some interesting ideas in this and the director's previous film, *Cyborg*. Enough apparently for both half of Fallout 4's Institute plot to be a direct ripoff of both, along with some unmistakable inspiration in Kojima's MGSV: TPP. For *Nemesis* and The Phantom Pain, right at the end of the first action scene and at the time skip, mirrored in both the cyborg rehab and later D-Dog wolf-dog plot, and in the end of the 'Sahelanthropus' mission. The childish, Sandinista-esque chica also arguably evokes both Chico and Quiet to an uncomfortable degree, both in affect as well as the 'I hate you, but I also want you mister hero man' flipflop that happens within about 50 seconds in this film. It has some interesting ideas, but they are delivered with a childishly depraved mindset with elementary school storytelling and dialogue; and I am not being one ounce hyperbolic with that. But the woman on the codec call (another likely very early MGS inspiration) with the China doll bob haircut both had the best lines and gave the best performance.
- A film full of style, action, some cheese, and some hilariously unexpected moments; all sprinkled with a lil bit of sci-fi. It even had a few cool and creative shots throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and I will be adding it to my playlist of movies to revisit when I just wanna watch something fun.
