Chaplin - who went through four marriages, three of them dreadfully unhappy - plays a bigamist who cheerfully and gaily murders his many many wives for their money. Charles (no longer Charlie) Chaplin, for the first time playing a character who isn't the Tramp (the 'Jewish barber' in The Great Dictator was the Tramp in all but name, except that he spoke), is as always a joy to watch. He is always in complete control of his body, knows exactly and at all times what his limbs are doing, what expression his face is making, his proximity to other actors and to the props, all lessons learned from the Vaudeville and Tramp days. Monsieur Verdoux is not a "physical comedy" as such, but Chaplin comes close to making it one. Is it funny? Yes, and in some parts laugh-out-loud funny. But the tone on the whole is a huge departure from Chaplin's previous films, much darker and world-weary. Audiences in America had difficulty relating to it, and Chaplin's refusal to appear before the House unAmerican Activities Committee to name names would henceforward cast a shadow over his career. This is, if you like, the first of his "serious" comedies, and will be followed by the fantastic Limelight, and lastly by the elegiac A King In New York. The Tramp is dead, but Chaplin lives.
