Immaculate Ratings & Reviews
- DJOctober 17, 2024A hidden gem of a suspense/thriller in 2024. Sydney Sweeney plays an excellent character filled with paranoia, isolation, desperation and despair. The final 15 minutes with blow you away as well. One of the best of the year and one of the best "religious" horror films in a long time.
- Kevin WardJuly 1, 2025This was salvaged mostly by the ending that attempts to go full Isabelle Adjani Possession with Sweeney’s final scene. Loved that about it along with the practical gore. And while I liked the general premise, I came away feeling like most of this had one goal in mind, and that was to showcase Sweeney’s breasts without showing her breasts. I liked the Italian setting and the fact that a significant portion of this used Italian dialogue. It was a nice mechanism to separate and distance Cecilia from the rest of the pack and obfuscate to an extent the things that are happening around her. I’m probably giving some grace because I love religious horror—plus that ending really goes for it. But otherwise, I was actually a tad on the side of boredom watching this.
- rikrdox0May 24, 2025Not great
- RyezooFebruary 4, 2025This is a well made movie, let down with a script with not enough pizazz. Sydney Sweeney is great here and the story is interesting and f**ked up. A stronger script could of elevated this into being something rememberable. Worth a watch but nothing to ride home about.
- Desmond DaleJanuary 24, 2025What a confusing film with so much squandered potential. It starts off rather slow but plodding, seemingly setting up this horrific foundation with social commentary on both the ills of organized religion and the lack of autonomy for women within such organizations. It has all the makings of a deep psychological horror in the vein of Rosemary's Baby or an Ari Aster film but it quickly goes to shit soon after it builds this very promising foundation. Sydney Sweeney gives a good performance though she definitely seems to be channeling her roles in Handmaid's Tale and as Reality. She's sweet, naive and well intentioned but thrusted into a terrible situation where she has little to no control. She ends up subverting this veil of naivety by the end and giving a truly memorable effort. However, Immaculate is ultimately let down by its direction. There are so many terrible choices made midway through the film which favor silly entertainment rather than provoking thought. The plot is full of red herrings and several themes are abandoned entirely in lieu of making the biggest, easiest choices. It relies on incessant jump scares to generate horror rather than believing in and fleshing out its terrifying beginning premise. The director also decides to show too much at times when just an allusion would serve the film better by keeping the shroud of mystery intact. For example I don't think we need to see the father's lab, it comes off quite cheesy and like something out of B-horror. The ending is visceral and raw, but feels hamfisted and unearned. And thus, the film feels like it has multiple discordant identities. Does it want to be Malignant or does it want to be Rosemary's Baby?
- DanieleOctober 31, 2024This movie is horrible but not even that horrible that becomes fun again
