A very interesting look into the life of a man that everyone says is "difficult". I often find that the most damaged people use laughter as a shield and Chevy appears to be no different. Everything is a joke even delivered in a mean spirited way as the late great Patrice O'Neal said... It's coming from the same birth. Chevy rubbed a lot of people the wrong way and with our overly sensitive society a lot of his jokes don't play in this world. This documentary looks somewhere inside the man, his faults and his addictions and really tries to create a redemption story. But we also seem to forget that the terms "difficult to work with" adorn actors like Tom Hanks, Bill Murray and lots of others from that comedy scene of the early 80's. Maybe it's more than that. Maybe he comes from an age of being overly stern in a soft marshmallow world that we have created where actors and actresses have to smile and accept being degraded while thanking the directors for doing it. What happened on Community seemed quite unfair. While performing a race laden joke that was written for him... A fellow actress got offended and demanded an apology from him??? How does that make sense? Anyway... The documentary is difficult at times and complex. But that's what makes it worth watching. I feel if you go in a Chevy fan you will leave a Chevy fan but if you go in a Chevy hater .. this will not change your mind at all.

I loved watching the show and I've always been a big Chevy Chase fan. He really was so much. He made the '70s the '80s even into the '90s but Chevy Chase was. I grew up watching him. I grew up with everything that he did and I thought he was the best and he was so amazing at what he did. He could make you laugh and you couldn't stop and it was the best. It just was the best and I love the show and I thought it was absolutely beautiful to hear. How he was a human too. Which I knew that. But he had vices just like all of us. He was human not just because he was a star. He still still like the rest of us in our life. He was a human being that went through things just as we do and how amazing it is to see him still this age. He was the one and only great show great-great-great

Doesn't really delve deep enough into Chase and his demons. Sure there is a much richer story to tell for a braver filmmaker

I just watched I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not and I give it 5 out of 5 stars. This documentary pulled me in completely because it does not just show the career of Chevy Chase, it shows the complicated person behind the comedy. It surprised me with how raw, honest, and layered it is. I expected a simple look back at a famous comedian’s life, but instead I got a thoughtful exploration of fame, personality, talent, and the cost that comes from living under a spotlight for so long. It feels personal in a way that stays with you. The documentary paints a detailed picture of Chevy’s rise to fame and how quickly he became a defining face of American comedy. The early years on Saturday Night Live feel alive with excitement, energy, and creativity. You can see why people were drawn to him. He had a natural confidence and a physical comedic style that looked effortless. His timing, expressions, and ability to create humor out of simple movements made him stand out from the moment he stepped onto the stage. What makes the documentary powerful is how it does not shy away from the difficult parts of his life. It explores the mistakes, the conflicts, and the struggles that shaped him. It talks about his stubbornness, his ego, and the ways he pushed people away without always meaning to. It shows how fame can amplify both the best and the worst parts of a person. The interviews with friends, coworkers, and family members create a fuller picture of someone who was incredibly talented but also deeply flawed. That honesty makes the story feel more real and emotional. The emotional core of the documentary comes from the moments where Chevy reflects on his past. You can see the vulnerability behind his words. Some of his regrets come through quietly, and those small moments feel meaningful. It becomes clear that he is someone who used humor as a shield but also as a way to connect with the world. Those glimpses into his feelings lift the documentary beyond a simple career retrospective and turn it into a story about a man trying to understand the life he built. The pacing is strong. It moves through his career in a way that feels smooth and balanced. It gives attention to his greatest successes, like his time on SNL and the rise of his film career, while also spending time on the moments where he struggled personally and professionally. The documentary does not rush or drag. It lets each part breathe just enough to show why it matters. The interviews are thoughtful and add different perspectives. Some people remember him fondly, others speak honestly about how difficult he could be, and that mixture helps shape a deeper understanding of him. It shows how one person can be charming, brilliant, frustrating, and complicated all at the same time. The film respects the truth without ever feeling harsh or unfair. By the time it ended, I felt like I had watched a portrait of a man who shaped comedy but also battled himself along the way. I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not is emotional, honest, sharp, and full of insight. It completely earned its perfect rating from me.

An interesting look into the life of Chevy. Ultimately it fails to deliver anything more than a skin deep homage to his life. Was Chevy misunderstood or actually an a-hole? I would have preferred a deep conversation with former cast members. Unfortunately for us, most of the the talking is done by Chevy and close family members.

As a documentary, Its well put together.... I was surprised belushi's death wasn't mentioned.... Chevy is a difficult subject matter to work on and the documentary shows this, but the interviewer sticks at it and it's for the best. Personally, I think Chevy was walked into a hard place on the community issue as he mentioned he was good with Richard Pryor. Being essentially left off stage of SNL 50 was a disgrace.....

Does everyone in the movie buy their glasses from the same place?

I hate that this makes me want to feel super empathetic towards Chevy cause he is a prick, but also a good comedian and actor. I'm surprised how much time they spend on Community, but it is very important to knowing him like this. The SNL 50 stuff was also really interesting
  • cultfilmlikerJanuary 5, 2026
Truly impressive that Chevy can still be such an unapologetic piece of shit about stuff that happened 40 years ago I think the Community part overlooked a lot of stuff that led up to the incident.

A decent documentary with tons of interesting personalities, although not much criticism.
