Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan Ratings & Reviews
- Caleb DeBoest2d agoNot bad for the 8th entry of a Slasher series. Not great either though. Should be titled "Friday the 13th part VIII: Jason Takes a Boat Ride to Manhattan"
- Mr. DOctober 31, 2025** Spoiler alert ** I love how lubed up Jason is once he gets to Manhattan. He's soaking wet the rest of the movie! #schoolsoutmotherfkr
- Tyler SOctober 29, 2025Hodder still owns as Jason even if the movie surrounding him can sometimes be underwhelming. Transporting Jason always gives me a laugh and just like every Friday movie there are plenty of entertaining kills. The obvious standout being the Julius fight on the roof (the script had lot's of big set pieces in New York they never got the budget for, this fight was written to take place on the roof of Madison Square Garden, that would've been even crazier). Seeing the P.O.V. of Julius's head as it's falling into the dumpster is an all timer. Always dug the main theme by Metropolis called The Darkest Side of the Night (I like a lot of 80's movie soundtrack songs). I forgive the long boat trip and most of the land stuff being Vancouver instead of N.Y. because Jason doing his thing is the main draw here. My big gripe with Takes Manhattan is the very poor make up work on unmasked Jason and all the kid Jason stuff that should've never made the final cut. All that stuff is rough and holds this one back from a higher rating. 👍 6.5/10
- jackmeatAugust 10, 2025My quick rating - 4.5/10. In all honesty, this movie is not very good. I am not saying the obvious, I mean in relation to other Friday the 13th flix. The kills are extremely tame first off and you don't even get that one signature creative kill. The teleporting feature that Jason must use to get to his victims is way too accentuated in how silly it is as well. The main draw that I remember having when this came out was seeing Jason in what would be a playground for his massacre, New York City. But we only really get about 15 minutes for this and it seems he was always so dead set on getting the two from the ship that got him there to worry about wandering around to kill random people. Let's face it, that is what you wanted to see here. Definitely, a missed opportunity to really let him loose. At least this one has the best Jason, Kane Hodder. Still deserves to be part of the collection for any horror fan, and mine just got upgraded to 1080P.

- Jacob O’NealJune 14, 2025This movie is a bit of an oddball. The producers were concerned that the series was getting stale as the box office had been dipping since part 5. They needed something fresh for the franchise. So Jason went to New York…well, Canada mostly, but they did shoot briefly in Times Square. That shot of Jason standing there was awesome. But mostly we have scenes of Jason terrorizing high schoolers and their teacher on a boat trip to New York that somehow started from Crystal Lake. But they’re fighting a supernatural killer who can punch a man so hard his head will fly off so I guess I can suspend disbelief. Originally written with a higher budget in mind and more shooting time in New York, the movie centered around a group of high school seniors on a class trip to New York for school. Being late 80’s you can see the shift in characterizations from where we were in 1980 with the first one. Now we have the meek final girl who is afraid of water on a boat trip. Her trial intensity is increased by being forced to overcome her greatest fear to triumph over the evil of Jason. You have the MTV obsession of the late 80’s showing itself in the leather jacket wearing, guitar playing girl with an attitude. There’s the nerdy guy with the video camera trying to document everything he sees. There’s the immoral girl he loves. But he shouldn’t since she is attempting to blackmail her teacher while the kid who loves her records the scene from his hiding spot. The tone of the characters really seemed to shift with this one. It wasn’t meta, but it switched from having the characters be either horny jerks and horny sweethearts to something a little less pure, for lack of a better word. There were a lot of fun moments in Jason Takes Manhattan. The kill in the bathroom was better than expected given the cramped space. The boat’s disco room scene was fun. The pace of the movie was fast and never really dull. Sure, the movie is a cheesy mess. It’s cliched. It’s poorly acted by most. And Kelly Hu (X2, The Scorpion King) had that big 80’s hair. This is not my favorite movie in the series. It’s still fun. I appreciate it for what it tried to do. It was also the first time Ken Kirzinger played Jason for a shot of being thrown out a window. 15 years later he replaced Kane Hodder in Freddy Vs. Jason. Coming up next time - Jason is sidelined but the Necromicon gives us his spirt.
- Carlos IbarraApril 10, 2025One of the more derided entries in the series, it came out at a point when these slasher flicks has run out of steam. As such this one gets gimmicky in placing old Jason into a new setting. Most people hate on it, because there's not enough that actually takes place in New York, but I love it still. Helps that it's the first one I saw, at a young age, but I love the atmosphere made by being stuck on this doomed ship.
- Josh COctober 21, 2024I can see why this was the lowest grossing in the franchise. It tried to be way too many different things instead of sticking to the tired and trued formula. I was ready for this to be over with about 25 mins before it actually ended.
