Donnie Darko Ratings & Reviews

Donnie Darko is simple, yet thought provoking, which results in an interesting and philosophical film "Every Living Creature On This Earth Dies Alone." Donnie Darko is a very interesting film, about a boy that is different from everyone around him. This causes him to perseive reality in a different way. The question is if Donnie's disconnection with the perceived reality of the other characters, is also a disconnection with reality in itself. The film makes you question whether Donnie is crazy or just different. The cinematography is good, but nothing extraordinary. In this case that's a good thing, because it places the focus on the characters, story and its philosophical aspects. Thats exactly where this film shines. The acting by Jake Gyllenhaal is great, like he is with all of his other films. Especially the ones where he plays a mentally unstable character. I don't think I've ever seen a film with a bad Jake Gyllenhaal performance and that's why he is one of my favorite actors. The story is quite simple, but this doesn't mean the plot is too. The plot not only has a philosophical aspect to it, but is also very interesting to dissect. Donnie escaping death created an alternate universe where the girl dies and the world will end. In order to end the alternate universe and save the girl, and the world, Donnie has to die during the event that created this alternate universe. This all sounds pretty simple, but gives you a lot to think about. For instance, this means that not everything that happens in the alternate universe, will happen in the main universe. In other words, the pedophile that got exposed in the alternate universe, will now never be exposed. It also means that there is no certainty which universe, and timeline, is the real one. Maybe they're all real, which means that reality is subjective. Another thing that you can ask yourself is if there was actually an alternate universe, or was everything just in Donnie's head right before he died? Maybe the alternate universe was comparable to seeing your life flash by right before you die. Donnie was laying in bed when he died, so it could also be a dream. The sound of the plane and engine falling could've triggered the dream. Questions like this give this film an insane amount of rewatchability. With every new insight you get, you will look at this film from a completely different perspective. Letterboxd: Mike_v_E

Excitingly original indie vision.
New York Post
Lou Lumenick
An engaging, time-tripping Holden Caulfield.
Washington Post
Desson Thomson
It flutters, like a mischievous butterfly, above the despairing hands of easy description.
Chicago Sun-Times

This set-up and development is fascinating, the payoff less so.
San Francisco Chronicle

If this movie ever figured out what it wanted to be when it grows up, it would be a terrific one.
Dallas Morning News

Donnie Darko may be too ambitious for a debut feature, but ambition and imagination still trump mediocrity any day of the week.
Chicago Tribune
Michael Wilmington
Just another self-absorbed teen chronicle, with the added twist of a little time travel and a surprise ending.
New York Times
Elvis Mitchell
Kelly is unable to give the movie the kind of pacing that would make us laugh and shock us simultaneously, because he's too infatuated with an aura of hand-me-down gloom.
Austin Chronicle
Kimberley Jones
An unnerving, electrifying debut film from 26-year-old writer/director Kelly, one that elucidates the universal traumas of growing up, but does so with a startling uncommonness.
Lessons of Darkness
Nick Schager
Defines itself through sustained mood, otherworldly intrigue and deep, abiding humanism.
Slant Magazine
Ed Gonzalez
An apocalyptic sweat chamber nervously situated between complacency and heartbreaking could-have-been hopefulness.
Chicago Reader
Lisa Alspector
Kelly is a supple and courageous storyteller, boldly free-associating as he mixes parody and satire with earnest psychodrama and coming up with plot points no one could anticipate.
Variety
Todd McCarthy
Donnie Darko has plenty of problems. But most stem from a young filmmaker overswinging on his first time up to the plate and hitting a deep fly out rather than a home run.
Salon.com
Andrew O'Hehir
A stunning technical accomplishment that virtually bursts with noise, ideas and references.
Seattle Times
Melanie McFarland
First-time director-writer Richard Kelly draws on a number of intriguing elements ... without including a single, crucial gem that pulls everything together.
Midwest Film Journal
Nick Rogers
Maybe Richard Kelly's fate is to be the cult-film circuit's Michael Cimino. He has yet to match the mood or magnitude of his debut - a collision of time-travel sci-fi, commentary on '80s malaise and teen angst that's simultaneously witty and poignant.
Village Voice
J. Hoberman
A wondrous, moodily self-involved piece of work that employs X-Files magic realism to galvanize what might have been a routine tale of suburban teen angst.
Nick's Flick Picks
Nick Davis
The film...asks the question: what if the universe as we live it, not just as we theorize it, really isn't as we imagine it? In making the mundane as bottomless as the cosmic, Donnie Darko has the guts to remain a riddle itself.

Felix Vasquez Jr.
A brilliant and truly incredible piece of art that deserves to be watched...
