As an epidemic of a lethal airborne virus - that kills within days - rapidly grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself.
Where to Watch Contagion
- Really liked how grounded this feels. The whole outbreak is handled in such a matter-of-fact way that it almost feels like watching a really expensive documentary, and somehow that makes it more unsettling. The cast is obviously stacked, but Kate Winslet, Matt Damon and Jude Law stood out the most for me. The little details about how quickly everything spreads are also really effective, especially the scenes showing how easily people pass germs around without even thinking about it. The downside is that the movie can feel a little cold. There are so many characters and separate storylines that it's hard to get properly attached to anyone, and some of the scientific stuff is more interesting than the actual drama. The Jude Law storyline also feels a bit disconnected from everything else. Still, I really like the clinical style and the way it avoids turning the outbreak into some huge Hollywood spectacle. Smart, tense and surprisingly believable, even if it doesn't always hit emotionally.
- I really enjoy apocalypse and pandemic themed movies. This is one of the more enjoyable ones I've seen. You get a great cast of characters from the government do gooders to the slimy journalist trying to take advantage of the situation. As well as the ignorant local government officials worried about their budget. I felt it gave a good potential scenario of what could happen if something of this magnitude happened. You have good people caught in the crossfire with a virus that doesn't care if you are a doctor or a young child it's coming for you unless you. I enjoyed the plot especially the detective like nature of some of the characters as they try and find patient zero. Well worth the watch.
- Stephen Soderbergh's latest direction, "Contagion" (2011), even though bringing less than expected excitement, is an absorbing movie to watch, efficient as a social and behavioural study, but no less as an accomplished collection of individual case studies, offering sufficiently thought-provoking arguments.
- My quick rating - 6,8/10. Not only extremely timely for what is going on right now but also very well made. The acting in this one is top-notch notch as everyone has to act out the urgency throughout when faced with an epidemic of mass proportions running out of control. The whole scenario is well thought out and again sounds similar to what initially the COVID beliefs were. The way the whole movie plays out keeps you on the edge of your seat and in the last few moments of the flick, they quickly show you just how easy the whole thing was, and how it began. Wonderful film work in how it is all just summed up and lets you breathe.
