- Zokkiie1d agoI’ve never been a huge fan of plays being turned into films like this, but this one works better than most for me. The dialogue is obviously the main attraction, and it can get pretty wordy, but the performances make it worth sitting through. Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole are both excellent, and their relationship is what really keeps the movie interesting. Watching their friendship turn into a bitter power struggle is easily the best part. It’s also got some great sets, costumes and a proper sense of scale, even if it still feels very much like a stage play at times. The pacing can be a little slow, and some of the political stuff gets quite heavy, but there’s a lot of good material here. Not usually my kind of movie, but I can definitely see why it’s so well regarded.
