Lacey Chabert was absolutely one of my high-school crush actresses, and reuniting her with a Party of Five co-star already had me halfway won over before the snow even started falling. And yes, at the end of the day this is still a very by-the-numbers Hallmark Christmas movie. You can see the structure coming from a mile away: family reconnection, cosy misunderstandings, festive scenery, emotional reconciliation — all the usual ingredients are present and accounted for. But honestly? I really loved it anyway. A huge part of that is the Scottish setting. The film leans hard into castles, countryside, and winter atmosphere, and it absolutely works as comfort viewing. More importantly, they actually included Scottish actors in the mix, so it wasn’t just a parade of painfully fake accents wobbling around the Highlands. That authenticity — even in small doses — helps the whole thing feel warmer and more believable. Lacey Chabert does exactly what you want her to do here: charming, easy to watch, and completely at home in this sort of film. The chemistry and nostalgia factor carry a lot of the emotional weight, but the movie knows its audience well enough to lean into that rather than apologise for it. No, it’s not groundbreaking cinema. It’s Christmas comfort food. But sometimes that’s exactly what you want, and this delivers it with enough sincerity and charm to make it stand out from the endless pile of forgettable holiday movies. 🥃 A hot whisky by a stone fireplace — warm, nostalgic, and best enjoyed while the rain lashes the windows outside.
