Star Cops may have a name that sounds like an ’80s parody—and the show even jokes about it—but behind that title is one of the first truly realistic crime dramas set in space. Long before talk of commercial spaceflight, lunar bases, and missions to Mars became mainstream, this series was already exploring the political, ethical, and economic complications of humanity expanding into the solar system. Nearly 40 years later, its subject matter feels uncannily relevant. If you can look past the dated ’80s TV effects and modest budget, the storytelling is impressively grounded. Each episode focuses on plausible crimes, scientific challenges, and jurisdictional conflicts that we genuinely will face as space becomes accessible to private companies, emerging nations, and non-superpower players. The mysteries are intelligent, the character dynamics solid, and the world-building remarkably forward-thinking. Star Cops was ahead of its time—sometimes too far ahead—but today it feels more prophetic than ever.
