Fine, 3.5. I need more control over my rating plex Ok, so the movie. If you haven't had or lived in a bad relationship? You will hate this, If on the other hand, you will immediately be in a mental place that makes stereotypical sense. I take points for using psychology as a punchline, but it's real enough to pull at least a few layers. It gets old halfway through.

“we love a contentious environment.” everything about this appeals to my sensibilities, from the anxiety-inducing comedy to the immaculate blocking to the barely controlled atmosphere of sexually charged frustration to the surprisingly poignant and vulnerable climax and conclusion. being an american remake of an adaptation of a stage play, the intimate setting of the original work still translates to this film, and it feeling like a stage production only adds to its entertainment value for me. my favorite moment is when joe and angela step away briefly to hit a joint, because it’s a glimmer of the people they used to be and a relationship that no longer exists. i was the only one in my screening, but it felt like the room was alive.

The Invite delivers the absolute best kind of uncomfortable comedy. Had a great time watching it in the theater.

It's not what you think it's about, but then it kind of is, and then it's definitely not. The Invite succeeds at doing something not many films can achieve in making me feel both incredibly uncomfortable while also completely engaged. A big round of applause for the four actors delivering on every level, but also to Olivia Wilde for continuing to impress from the director's chair.

Great acting carries this film to a satisfying conclusion, but it’s one you might not expect

If a sound editor could be blamed for a movie, this is it. Hannah and her Sisters without any soundtrack and an undercurrent of nastiness. An unpleasant experience.

Four splendid actors carry this film beautifully — plenty of laughs, plenty of depth. And yet, somehow, it left me with an inexplicable sense that something was missing. Still worth watching for the performances alone.

Really thought I was going to see Seth Rogen and Edward Norton makeout

The best dinner parties aren't remembered for who won the topic of conversation. They're remembered for what everyone accidentally reveals about themselves along the way. The Invite understands that better than most relationship dramas I've seen. Olivia Wilde resists the temptation to manufacture tension through constant twists, instead allowing it to emerge naturally as each conversation chips away at the carefully constructed versions these characters present to one another. By the time the evening begins exposing just how complicated everyone's relationships really are, the film has already done the harder work of making everyone around the table feel authentic. I didn't agree with every conclusion it reaches about modern relationships, particularly its occasionally narrow view of monogamy. Thankfully, those disagreements never became the story. Cesc Gay, Will McCormack, and Rashida Jones have written people first and talking points second, and the film is far stronger because of it. That credibility depends on a cast that understands exactly what kind of story they're telling. Seth Rogen is the standout, using a comedic charm that's defined much of his career to make Joe immediately approachable before revealing emotional depths I wasn't expecting. Olivia Wilde, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton are equally effective, giving their characters enough complexity to avoid slipping into romantic archetypes. Just as impressive is how effortlessly hysterical the film remains throughout. The humor never feels like it's reaching for a laugh. It grows naturally out of the personalities around the table. Romantic dramedies rarely connect with me the way they seem to connect with everyone else, but The Invite won me over because it never mistakes clever dialogue for honest insight. Although I was resistant to some of the ideas, I never stopped being amused by the people expressing them, and that's ultimately what makes any conversation worth joining.

Perfect blend of comedy, romance, and drama. The cast had great chemistry & were spicy, the humor was great, and the story felt like a breath of fresh air. The ending was heartfelt and left things on a hopeful note. Something we can all relate to! A great movie and a refreshing change of pace from the run of “peak cinema” we’ve been getting in theaters this year.

This is why we go to the theaters. This is why we support comedy. Holy poop.

1 hour 47 minutes of reasons why people should go to therapy. While being really funny.
