- Superhero movies have come a loooooong way in 30 years. I absolutely despise movies that treat their audience like idiots and feel the need to spell out every damn thing, and Spawn does plenty of that. John Leguizamo's Clown is basically comic relief, exposition machine and villain rolled into one disgusting package. He probably had the most fun of anyone making this movie and certainly got the juiciest part. The CGI has aged terribly. Even for the time, the movie sometimes feels less interested in telling a story than in saying, "LOOK WHAT COMPUTERS CAN DO!" Fire! Morphing! Capes! Hell! More CGI! It feels like the director wanted to cram every shiny new '90s visual-effects trick he could into 96 minutes. Which is frustrating because underneath all that is actually a decent dark story. A murdered man is resurrected, horribly disfigured, discovers his wife has moved on, and realizes he's being manipulated into becoming an agent of Hell. That's a good movie! Unfortunately, every time Spawn starts becoming that movie, the comic-book silliness comes crashing through the wall. At least the production design gets something right. Some of the sets and grimy cityscapes reminded me of Burton's Gotham, and there's a genuinely dark, gothic movie hiding somewhere underneath all the noise. Michael Jai White certainly looks the part and handles the physical side well, but the movie rarely gives him enough dramatic material to make Al Simmons particularly interesting. Martin Sheen gets to chew some scenery, while Leguizamo appears to have decided there was no scenery left worth saving. The biggest problem isn't really that the technology is dated. Batman and The Crow had already demonstrated that comic-book movies could have atmosphere, character and darkness without constantly reminding us WE ARE WATCHING A COMIC BOOK! Spawn could have been a supernatural tragedy. Instead, it often feels like an expensive comic book brought literally to life, complete with all the shouting, exposition and visual excess. There's a much better movie buried in here. Unfortunately, it appears to be trapped somewhere in Hell with the CGI department.
- Yes the 1997 Spawn movie is very flawed and the effects haven't aged well, most notably the effects on The Devil Malebolgia! However this is a very fun & entertaining movie, that has very good performances from the entire cast. Michael Jai White was a brilliant Spawn I thought. And John Leguizamo was just as awesome as the clown/violator spawns nemesis, if anything he steals the show you could argue. But I do absolutely love Michael Jai Whites potrayal of Spawn though. It has very cool action for the time and I still enjoy it now, all these years later. Martin Sheen was also great. It's also paced fairly well, its not as bad as its reputation says it is. I will hold my hands up ✋️✋️ and admit, that I do have a lot of bias nostalgia for this film. I grew up watching it and I still have the VHS 📼 tape of it to this day. Probably if I didn't have those ties to it, I'd be a lot harsher on it. I see the flaws a 💯 and the special effects as I mentioned are awful now in 2026. But it does have its moments and good qualities about it as well. Of course the animated series is much better that goes without saying than this adaptation. At the same time though I do think that, this a very watchable, passable & digestible film, despite its issues. My Personal Rating for Spawn 1997 is a 6/10
- A favorite as a kid and still the best superhero I think. His suit/cape and all its powers are the coolest of all heros by far. When he first changes into the spawn and you see the suit was so awesome when I first watched it. Michael jai white is the man and one the best martial artists out there even though there isn't much in this film. Plus John Leguizamo as the clown or "violator" is hilarious. I've seen this movie a bunch of times but I just watched it again and it's still dope as hell. Good story line. CGI and special effects really good for the time it was made. Some people say the devil character "Malebolgia" looks whack but it's more or less how it was in the comics but the whole movie is worth the watch for sure. I'll take Spawn over the Avengers, Batman and any superhero any day.
- First saw this one on an import DVD at a friend’s place, and that already gave it a certain “forbidden fruit” vibe. Later picked up my own DVD… only to discover the French version had censored the killing, which somehow made the whole thing feel even more chaotic than intended. I’ve got the comics, so I know how dark and stylish Spawn should be and the movie tries, it really does. But the CGI was just too early in its evolution, wobbling somewhere between ambitious and “oh no, please stop moving.” Still, there’s something charming about how hard it swings for the fences. Good movie at its core, just trapped in the technology of its time.
- My quick rating - 5,1/10. After being murdered by corrupt colleagues in a covert government agency, Al Simmons makes a pact with the devil to be resurrected to see his beloved wife Wanda. In exchange for his return to Earth, Simmons agrees to lead Hell's Army in the destruction of mankind. Back then, I was really into the comic. Well, I read it, didn't buy toys or anything but I did rush to the theater to see it. I was VERY disappointed then. This may be the second time I have seen it. From what I thought then I think now I am a bit more subjective in my rating. It still does the story no justice and I really am not sure why Leguizamo had such a flash of popularity there but aside from his nonsense character, Jai White was a solid Spawn and the movie does deliver some mindless action. But with now-dated effects, the movie also doesn't stand the tests of time too well. Maybe with a better story, it might have. Oh well, still part of the collection.
- Would have benefitted from "less is more" mentality. The CG hell scenes look awful and are noticeably worse quality than the suit or the monster, which are mostly practical. This distracts from a decent story. Leguizamo is campy is hell but unfortunately he ends up being the most iconic part of this movie.
