Aspiring singers perform auditions in front of four coaches who have their backs turned to them. Coaches who like the voices they hear turn around, and the contestant gets to decide which coach will mentor him/her.

Those who succeed here will progress to the Battle and Knockout phases.

    The Battles 1The contest heats up as the teams assembled by Tom Jones, Will.i.am, Jennifer Hudson and Olly Murs enter the Battle phase. Here, the coaches are tasked with chipping away at their roster of would-be stars via head-to-head studio battles. Each of the coaches are given `steals', which gives them a chance to save any of the acts knocked out by their rival coaches during the sing-offs. As the contest gets ever fiercer, Emma Willis will be on hand to congratulate the victors, and commiserate with their defeated rivals.

    The Battles 2The singers who made it through the audition stages face another round of head-to-head performances, as the second night of the Battles phase arrives. Here, the would-be stars must once again demonstrate their skill to coaches Tom Jones, Will.i.am, Olly Murs and Jennifer Hudson if they are to remain in the contest. As ever, the coaches are also armed with `saves', which give them a chance to recruit any of their colleagues' knocked-out performers to their own teams.

Helping them are R'n'B star Craig David, members of the Black Eyed Peas, Australian pop queen Kylie Minogue, 2006 winner of The X Factor Leona Lewis and The Voice UK's reigning champion, Mo Jamil. Only four acts can progress to the final and for the first time in the series, the decision of which acts will go through to the next round and which will be eliminated rests entirely with the votes of the viewing public. Members of Team Olly, Team JHud, Team Will and Team Tom look to move one step closer to winning a recording contract with Polydor Records.
