Caesar and General Vespasian decide to send Mandoni to galleys, as punishment for the general's assassination attempt. Going to galleys represented a slow and painful death for a slave. Numancia will never see Mandoni again. Desperate, the slave Numancia asks Pompeu for forgiveness for her 'brother' Mandoni (Numancia is hiding the fact that Mandoni is her husband from everyone).
