The 1990s remake of The Untouchables set out with ambition, borrowing heavily from the style, tone, and action of Brian De Palma’s hit film. Visually, it captured the gritty Prohibition‑era atmosphere well, and the production team clearly worked hard to deliver a polished period look on a television budget. However, the series faced an uphill battle from the start. It wasn’t just competing with the movie—it was competing with the legacy of the landmark 1959 TV series, a cultural touchstone that set the standard for crime dramas of its era. Without major stars and with far fewer resources than its cinematic counterpart, the remake struggled to carve out its own identity. While it looked good and had moments of solid storytelling, it simply couldn’t match the impact or staying power of its predecessors. Ultimately, it remains an interesting but overshadowed attempt to revive a classic.
