Victor Novak, a former juvenile judge, belatedly became a teacher. Performing replacements throughout France, he is in search of his wife and daughter who have abandoned him. In each episode, he finds himself confronted with a problem concerning a child and leading to a social issue (racism, illiteracy, child abuse, unemployment, illegal immigration, HIV status, refusal of schooling, homoparenthood, disability, illness, etc.)
