The Saint is a modern-day Robin Hood of sorts; he prevents criminals from succeeding. Where a reward is offered, or where the criminal's loot is not discovered or disappears, he keeps it to cover his expenses. Simon Templar must always stay one step ahead of the law. Fortunately, his wit, charm, and knowledge of a criminal's ways make this a fairly easy task.

    The Fellow TravellerThe Saint has a meeting in Stevenage with Henry Matson, who designs components for guidance systems and missiles. Fearing he's being followed, Matson arranges a new meeting, but he barely manages to whisper to Templar a few words before he's killed.

A young actress has gone undercover as a beggar to try and find the identity of the 'king', and Simon joins her, posing as a beggar. He's taken to a hostel run by a kindly American who's a friend of a philanthropic contessa, but It's up to Templar to unmask the so-called king.

    The Rough DiamondsThe Saint accompanies Alan Uttershaw to the airport with a package of industrial diamonds to be handed over to a security firm. But the diamonds handed to impostors. Suspicion falls on the partner of the man to whom the diamonds were to be given, but he's murdered. Simon overcomes the gangsters sent to subdue him and awaits a meeting with the real mastermind of the robbery.

Templar's now sure of Purdell's honesty, but is being manipulated by another party, whom he plans to flush out.
