This British drama aired from 2003 to 2011, a total of 86 episodes about a dedicated staff of doctors and nurses caring for patients at the fictional St. Aidan's Royal Free Hospital in the seaside town of Elsinby in this spinoff of the popular British show "Heartbeat." Set in the 1960s, the series focuses on the medical issues faced by patients and the moral dilemmas those emergencies bring.

    The Unbreakable ChainA student nurse causes quite a stir when she arrives in the middle of the night, while Ken and Alun contend with a farming family suffering a crisis. Brigid and Jill deliver a Down's syndrome baby whose parents don't want anything to do with it, and Lizzie's crash diet has alarming consequences.

    If Not for YouPorter Alun gets involved in a road accident with a suspected drunk driver, while Samantha does not impress Matron, and a female patient makes serious allegations against Dr. Ormerod. The rugby match between staff from the Royal and Ashfordly General is revived and the consequences are tragic.

    ConsequencesOrmerod faces a difficult dilemma when Caroline's father Henry turns up suggesting they turn off her life-support machine, having done all they can, but the guilt-ridden doctor wonders whether he'd only be letting her die so he can be with Weatherill. Meanwhile, Goodwin puts his career on the line when he allows a member of the public to cure a back injury, student nurse Samantha Beaumont is less than impressed by a date with theatre technician Alun Morris and a patient's pet parrot causes chaos in the hospital.

    Famous for a DayThe staff are excited by the arrival of a TV film crew at the hospital, especially Mr Harper, who is desperate to be caught on camera - and it looks like his dreams of stardom may be about to come true when Mr Middleditch gives him an important job for the broadcast. Elsewhere, the atmosphere is much more tense, as Dr. Ormerod and nurse Meryl Taylor are called out to help a boy who has been trapped below the surface of an icy lake for 20 minutes - and to make matters worse, the ambulance carrying the unconscious lad back to hospital gets caught in a snowdrift. On a lighter note, Ray Piper is brought in with a huge bump on his head - and there's much hilarity when it turns out his wife has hit him with a frozen turkey. But before the day is out, he's not the only member of his family to be admitted.

    Skin DeepBrigid arrives at a decision and Lucy Klein is disturbed by the unscheduled reappearance of a figure from the past. Mr. Harper rests on his laurels, certain his future is assured, while Ormerod and Weatherill reveal they are about to end their relationship - only to find the news is already common knowledge.

    CliffhangerThe police are called to the Royal after a man with a leg injury turns out to be one of two gun-men on the run and his friend gets ready to shoot. Gordon is called out to a cave to tend some injured fossil-hunters and, whilst Ken tries to find a television set to watch the World Cup, Matron visits Brigid in the convent to talk her into returning to the hospital.

    All the Fun of the FairThe fair comes to town and the fortune-teller reveals staff futures though Gordon now knows his own. Jeff and Samantha have to cut free the operator on the waltzers who gets caught in the mechanism and take him to the hospital for Mr. Rose to operate on him. He explains that his father, who runs the rides, has been having dizzy spells, and the doctors arrive too late to prevent him from causing further disaster.

    Holding on TightA group of drunken lads on a stag night arrive at the Royal very much the worse for wear but the drink they have been consuming is lethal hooch made from industrial alcohol and one of them is blinded as a result. Mr. Rose performs an operation in the home of Ada,who has a gangrenous toe whilst Samantha still can't get it right as far as Matron is concerned.

    For Those in PerilThe hospital staff have an intriguing case on their hands when local tramp Sebastian Fox is found dead. Ken Hopkirk rummages through his belongings and is surprised to find war medals, leading to the discovery that he was a decorated Navy hero. When a relative is traced but refuses to help with funeral arrangements, the Royal team decide to give him a fitting send-off by scattering his ashes at sea. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Goodwin is shocked to discover a farmer's cattle herd have contracted a disease which has passed into cheese that's available in the area, and Jill Weatherill, Matron and Sister Brigid encounter a runaway girl.

    ReckoningGordon is angry that the police feel the need to investigate his wife's death but Jeff and Samantha get cosy together. Routine tests on young Peter Blackwood sadly reveal that the lad is subject to a hereditary heart disease in his family, and disaster strikes for Ken, who needs an operation after lifting a piano, and Lizzie, who crashes into Harper's car during her driving lesson.
  • Doing Time

    Doing TimeJeff's failure to spot post-natal depression in new mum Sheena almost ends in disaster when she ends up on top of a cliff likely to jump. A prison van crashes, killing the driver and injuring the convicts and a guard, who are brought to the Royal for treatment. Ken recognises an old friend among the prisoners.

    Home to RoostJeff discovers that he has a love rival for Samantha but Gordon and Jill are brought closer when his former father-in-law tells them that he was suspicious of their relationship and hired a private detective to follow them. They announce their engagement. The hospital is evacuated after a suicide victim is brought in, whose body appears to be giving off toxic fumes.
