A famous mountain man, Cass Callicot, comes to North Fork intent on challenging Lucas McCain to prove who is the best man with a rifle. Lucas has nothing to prove and won't take the bait, even after Callicot calls him a coward. The mountain man suggests they have a hunting contest but again, Lucas refuses. Determined to get his way, Callicot kidnaps Mark and goes off into the mountains awaiting Lucas' arrival.
