Season 1 Reviews
Los Angeles Times
Howard Rosenberg
Most of its gags are so broad and strained, and its characters so brazenly dysfunctional and over the top, that its negative message about the Washington Establishment is smothered by mannered lunacy.
AV Club
Emily St. James
Powers is far from a perfect show. But as a missing link it's as good as any show on the air at that time.
Chicago Tribune
Rick Kogan
It`s wonderfully silly and pleasingly mean-spirited, much like the world its seeks to satirize.
Washington Post
Tom Shales
[Norman] Lear's brand of satire comes across as largely irrelevant, something that doesn't attack many of the items on the endless list of things that need attacking.
Entertainment Weekly
Ken Tucker
This low-down satire of Washington politics and the American family offers the broad laughs and sly cunning of a first-rate Broadway farce.
Buffalo News
Alan Pergament
In a season of blandness, [The Powers That Be] is as welcome as a Democrat with charisma
Deseret News (Salt Lake City)
Scott D. Pierce
The Powers That Be may just be [Norman] Lear's biggest hit in more than a decade. It's certainly the funniest show to come to network television this season.
People Magazine
David Hiltbrand
The writing is knee-jerk cynical, and the whole cast wildly overacts. Still, it's a lot sharper than Walter and Emily, the creaky sitcom it replaces.
TV Insider
Matt Roush
Though largely forgotten, this sharp political satire set in the household of U.S. Senator William Powers (a post-Dynasty John Forsyth) is notable for its ensemble cast of future A-listers...
