Access to the Julia Jayne file produces stronger, troubling visions for Ilonka -- a poor herald for Family Day where, for two residents, no relatives come at all. It also marks the passing of Natsuki's friend Tristan, prompting a vision debated over for its significance by the residents. Afterwards, the group yearns for a ghost story, and Kevin feels ready enough to serve one up.
Gimme a Kiss

Episode 4
Gimme a Kiss
Discovery of the secret sub-basement brings out the fear of God in Sandra and the hatred of God in Spencer. Ilonka finds a book chronicling the beginning of the Midnight Club. At their nightly meeting, Sandra tells the story Gimme a Kiss, a neo-noir tale in which illicit teen love leads to murder. Outside of the meeting, Spencer hears a spectral voice, and Anya experiences a shadow attack.

Witch
E6
Episode 6
Witch
Kevin develops his story of Dusty the serial killer a little further, but then Ilonka throws in her story of "Witch," about a girl who can glimpse the immediate future at a cost. Anya, falling into sepsis, interrupts the tale. Ilonka suggests trying a blood ritual as a fixative to keep Anya with them longer.

Ilonka shares with Kevin what she overheard but holds back that she thinks it's about her. Dr. Stanton receives confirmation about good news for one of the residents. Affected by Anya's dearth, Natsuki takes some alone time and tells her Midnight Club story, "Road to Nowhere," only to Amesh.
The Eternal Enemy
E9
Episode 9
The Eternal Enemy
Dr. Stanton informs the teen who is no longer dying. Ilonka and Kevin bring their shared haunting to the attention of the Midnight Club, but no others share their visions. Natsuki suggests these ghosts are spirits that eat the futures of dying people. Revelations scatter the gang but they reconvene and hear Spencer's story -- The Eternal Enemy. Afterward, Shasta involves Ilonka in a ritual in the secret basement.

Season 1 Reviews
Detroit News
Tom Long
As the show flies by, the nightly scare stories work more effectively than the lumbering haunted house stuff, and of course all of this is housed in a Young Adult world that may be a bit gory but is essentially wholesome.
Black Girl Nerds
Cassondra Feltus
The writer-director's signature blend of spine-chilling horror and dramatic character study makes 'The Midnight Club' an absolute must-see for horror aficionados, Flanagan admirers, Pike fans, and just anyone who loves exceptional storytelling.
indieWire
Ben Travers
The Midnight Club aspires to change the conversation around death, perhaps for an entire generation of viewers, but such heady (and necessary) ideas aren't well-embodied by what quickly devolves into a cheesy, scattered, and frustrating tale.
Slant Magazine
Niv M. Sultan
The series uses the trappings of horror to explore the power of storytelling as a means of reckoning with the unfathomable.
CNN.com
Brian Lowry
This show comes with a pronounced young-adult spin. Yet despite finding softer moments in the vulnerability of the central octet and their bummer of a situation, there's relatively little to distinguish the drama on that level.
JoBlo's Movie Network
Alex Maidy
As much as I loved the book, I think I love the series even more. By far the most varied storytelling of any Flanagan series to date, I hope The Midnight Club prompts viewers who never read a Christopher Pike novel to go back and check him out.
San Francisco Chronicle
Chris Vognar
This could have been a movie with something to say about death and something to add to the horror genre. Instead, unfortunately, it's a slog.
Pay or Wait
DarkSkyLady
The Midnight Club does not chill, but the stories within the story are rare for a series nowadays, add in some gorgeous visuals, and an outstanding cast, and the series is worth watching.
Perri Nemiroff (YouTube)
Perri Nemiroff
Yet another deeply moving chiller from team Flanagan with a hugely charming must-know young ensemble bound for big things.
TIME Magazine
Judy Berman
The Midnight Club isn't the worst imaginable adaptation of Pike's minefield of a book; there's a version of the show that might've been downright offensive. But it's no page-turner either.
New York Post
Lauren Sarner
For those who are looking for horror with heart, and a Halloween season viewing with more on its mind than blood and gore, it's well worth a watch.
SpookyAstronauts
Emma Wolfe
I like watching things that are completely unique and different, and I just didn't know what was coming.
San Jose Mercury News
Randy Myers
While not frightening per se, "The Midnight Club" taps into the horrors that life presents us and the demons we chase inside, and outside.
RogerEbert.com
Brian Tallerico
A gateway drug for potential new horror fans.
Polygon
Ethan Warren
The series' world is lush and immersive... but the characters inhabiting it can't seem to sink into their environs.
The Hollywood Reporter
Angie Han
Not all of the stories contained in The Midnight Club work equally well, and a few purposely don't really work at all. Collectively, however, they mount a compelling case for why stories matter and why scary stories in particular do...
Kristen Maldonado

A thriller mystery [that] tackles a lot of different genres from romance to detective noir to sci-fi. This show had a lot of potential [but] I would love to see them explore each character a little bit deeper.
IGN Movies
Amelia Emberwing
Mike Flanagan is a master of death and grief, and that's on full display throughout The Midnight Club. Unfortunately, the more threads the club members pull, the weaker the story gets.
TheWrap
Lauren Piester
When you put those two things together - dying kids telling ghost stories - that's when a show becomes something magical. And there is definitely a magic to "The Midnight Club."
Variety
Daniel D'Addario
The mix of personal stories among the teens has the power to resonate with anyone, but one suspects this show will find its most attentive audience among high-schoolers with stiff constitutions and strong nerves.
