Season 1 Ratings & Reviews
AV Club
Dennis Perkins
BBC America's sprawling, arresting eight-part historical miniseries The Last Kingdom proves that there's room enough on television for more than one Viking invasion.
Den of Geek
Louisa Mellor
Overall though, thumbs up to a promising, bloody start.
TheWrap
Debbie Day
Uhtred's trials intensify when he joins Alfred's quest to unite the kingdoms into England, creating an epic backdrop for a handsome, stellar cast and expert storytellers to weave television's latest addictive historical fiction.
The Hollywood Reporter
Keith Uhlich
There are admittedly few better ways to open an engagingly grimy and gory adventure show about the 9th century Viking invasion of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms than with the title card: "Special Guest Star Rutger Hauer."
Philadelphia Inquirer
Tirdad Derakhshani
Isn't in the same league as that other medievalesque literary adaptation Game of Thrones, nor does it have the epic scope of Vikings. But its breathtaking photography, glorious fight scenes, and fantastical story make it a worthwhile treat for genre fans.
New York Times
Neil Genzlinger
Hang around until Episode 3... and substantive themes begin to take shape that give this series a distinctive personality.
Variety
Brian Lowry
The project is spare and unsentimental, capturing the barbarism of the time through a protagonist straddling two disparate worlds.
AV Club
Kyle Fowle
The Last Kingdom, remarkably, already feels lived in, the focus on character motivation and thematic depth making sure that the show is more than just an excuse to watch Vikings and Englishmen rip each other apart.
Los Angeles Times
Mary McNamara
It subtly grows more complex with each passing hour until that hero becomes, to a certain extent, a supporting player in the far more dramatic epic of history.
San Francisco Chronicle
David Wiegand
There are no dragons in Last Kingdom, or need for fantasy at all, for that matter. History proves every bit as engaging as make-believe.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Rob Owen
As Thrones-aping series go, The Last Kingdom is a better bet than plenty of others. It's easier to follow than Bastard Executione" and less battle-crazy than Vikings, occupying a gentler middle ground.
Washington Post
Hank Stuever
The point is, once it gets going, "The Last Kingdom" is a nicely told and suitably adventurous story of revenge.
TV Insider
Matt Roush
This is smart, satisfying entertainment that brings new life to ancient history.
Yahoo! TV
Ken Tucker
If you're willing to sample one more mud-caked slog through ancient Anglo-Saxon history with attractive actors getting down and dirty, The Last Kingdom will prove worth the effort.
Uncle Barky
Ed Bark
[The Last Kingdom] all meshes together in enthralling fashion with a tale that's understandable and a setting that's tailor made for picturesque vistas... livens up Saturday nights with Emmy caliber storytelling and oft-sumptuous production values.
TV Equals
Mark Trammell
It's too soon to say if The Last Kingdom is truly a keeper, but the premiere, at least, is certainly a grabber.
Wall Street Journal
Nancy DeWolf Smith
At bottom, The Last Kingdom is a historical action series and you don't need skin in the game to enjoy it.
Boston Globe
Matthew Gilbert
There is plenty of spectacle in The Last Kingdom, but none quite as spellbinding as Alfred's quiet intelligence.
Under the Radar
Zach Hollwedel
The Saxon Stories, Bernard Cornwell's novel series on which the show is based, are undoubtedly compelling reads. But as a television adaptation, The Last Kingdom is too little, too late, and comes across as too unoriginal.
Screen Rant
David Griffin
The Last Kingdom stands alone, and excels at telling a story both compelling and unique.
