The Cannon family runs the High Chaparral Ranch in the Arizona Territory in 1870s. Big John wants to establish his cattle empire despite Indian hostility. He's aided by brother Buck and son Billy Blue. When Blue's mother was killed (in the first episode) John united his family with the powerful Montoyas by marrying their daughter Victoria (whose brother Manolito now lives with them as well).

Destination Tucson (1)This pilot launches the saga of the Cannon family as they fight to establish a ranch in the Arizona territory of the 1870s. Marauding Apaches led by Cochise are on the warpath. The Army orders the Cannon family to move on, but Big John Cannon won't budge. While his brother Buck rides off to recruit gun-carrying cowhands, Big John learns of another enemy: a Mexican land baron claims the Cannon property, and dispatches his men to seize the cattle.

The Arrangement (2)John and Buck go south to strike a deal with Montoya. They encounter the man who stole John's horse and says he can take them to Montoya. He turns out to be Montoya's delinquent son and John gets his deal along with a new bride to seal it.

The Ghost of ChaparralVictoria is over shadowed by the memory of Annalee. The rigid Big John refuses to let her make changes as he still feels their marriage is an arrangement with her father. A confrontation with Apaches and Victoria's old beau force a change.

Best Man for the JobJohn Cannon must decide whether to send his son to possible death to save their besieged ranch. Three army deserters, who have murdered Apaches on Cannon land, are taken prisoner by Indians. Captain Dabney fails in an effort to rescue the men, but gains Apache hostages, including a female relative of Cochise. When Captain Dabney refuses to trade prisoners, and as the Apaches prepare to execute the deserters (as well as Sam, who is also an Apache hostage), Cannon must decide whether to hand son, Billy Blue, the perilous job of secretly returning Dabney's hostages to Cochise. Guest Stars: Warren Stevens as Captain Dabney, Nino Cochise, grandson of Cochise as Cochise.

A Quiet Day in TucsonBlue needs new boots and the ranch needs supplies but cash is limited. Big John agrees to let Blue join Buck on a trip to town for supplies along with Manolito. However, the three lose their guns and the money on poker, drink, and women.

Young BloodBig John needs cattle to stock his ranch. He plans to send Buck to see Montoya to buy the stock but Buck breaks his leg racing the boys. Big John is persuaded to send Manolito and Blue in his place but their childish actions have a cost.

Shadows on the LandJohn Cannon needs cattle from Mexican ranchers for his Army beef contract, but finds the frightened men are being forced to sell at cheap prices to a ruthless cattle buyer. When John offers them higher prices, the ranchers refuse to sell because Dolf Tanner has threatened to kill them if they do. John and brother Buck try to force the ranchers to sell by refusing them watering rights, as they drive their herds toward Tanner. But Tanner strikes back by giving Apaches new rifles and urging them to kill the Cannon herds.

The FilibusterosBuck, Victoria and Manolito return to the Montoya Ranch and become prisoners, with Don Sebastian, of a degraded former Civil War friend of Buck. Lanier and his disheveled army announce plans to create their own state.

The Doctor from DodgeWhen Billy Blue Cannon is forced into a showdown with wanted gunfighters, he is saved by a wandering dentist who proves to be fast with a gun. John Cannon returns the favor to Doc Henry by agreeing to send Billy Blue to help the dentist establish a practice in Tucson. Billy Blue is kidnapped en route and held for ransom by the gunfighters, Jacques Dubois and Kid Curry. The boy loses faith in his new friend when the dentist throws in with the crooks. John Cannon corners Doc Henry with the ransom and prepares for a shoot-out.

Sudden CountryA greenhorn bank clerk and his wife arrive from St. Joseph, Missouri woefully unprepared to work the run down ranch they bought next to the High Chaparral. Complicating the situation is Buck falling in love with the beautiful wife.

A Hanging OffenseBlue kills a soldier attacking an Indian girl and takes the body to the fort only to learn he is the son of a general who wants justice for his dead son. Big John tries to defend his son in the court martial but he is out of his element.

The Price of RevengeBuck Cannon goes to work as foreman for a lovely neighboring widow, and clashes with his brother John when the job appears permanent. Buck falls in love with the widow, Melanie Cawthorne, and becomes her tool as she strives for quick riches and respectability. As water grows scarce, she buys stolen Mexican cattle from Romero without Buck's knowledge.

The Widow from Red RockBilly Blue Cannon faces possible hanging when he is court-martialed on the charge of killing an army general's son. Billy Blue saves an Indian girl from advances by a drunken army lieutenant, who is killed in the fight. When the girl flees to the Apache stronghold, Buck and Manolito risk their lives to persuade Cochise to release Blue's only eyewitness. Her testimony is discarded when the court learns her release was obtained by a bribe. It becomes obvious to John Cannon that the court-appointed defense is incapable of saving Billy Blue, and John personally takes over his son's defense.

Mark of the TurtleA Marshall asks Big John to help form a posse to join him on the trail of the Mexican bandit El Lobo who has been terrorizing the US. Big John and Buck know he is hiding on Montoya land which means trouble due to the pact with Montoya.

The TerroristManolito helps a friend escape jail and death in Mexico. Manolito brings the man and his sister to High Chaparral to rest not realizing his friend plans to kill the Mexican revolutionary Juarez during a visit to High Chaparral.
The Firing Wall

The Firing WallEl Caudillo's girlfriend Conchita lures the hands from High Chaparral into Mexico where they are taken prisoner. El Caudillo wants to start his own revolution by executing the men including Manolito's father who tries to rescue them.
The Assassins

The AssassinsAn Apache renegade and his followers plan to kill Cochise's peace representative in the Cannon ranch house and start a new Indian war. Medicine man Nock-Ay-Del explains that Cochise will agree to live peacefully if John Cannon offers sufficient gifts. Buck warns against a death trap when an outpost guard is killed during negotiations. Sub-chief Soldado and three warriors move in towards the ranch house to accomplish their purpose.
Survival

SurvivalBlue and Big John are stranded in the desert by Apaches with no horses and water to see if they can survive like the Apaches. They capture an Apache wounded by Blue who they think may lead them to water when he becomes thirsty.

Gold Is Where You Leave ItWhen three men believe they have found gold on the High Chaparral, Big John orders the area destroyed. The three men decide to fight back putting the Cannons in danger and cause Buck to have conflicted feelings about Victoria.

The KinsmanThe Cannons care for a wounded relative who repays them by stealing the ranch payroll. Uncle Dan Brookes arrives suddenly after a 15-year absence seeking safety in the heavily fortified ranch. He conceals the fact he is wanted dead or alive for murder and has been shot by bounty hunters Mace and Gurney. When Buck hires the bounty hunters as ranch hands, Brookes saves his own skin by offering to help Mace and Gurney steal the Cannon payroll.

Champion of the Western WorldBlue has his eye on a $300 silver saddle but only $18. He and the men decide they can win the money at the Fourth of July rodeo. When only John wins at the rodeo, it is left to Blue filling in at a prize fight for the boxer he hurt.

Ride the Savage LandBuck and Manolito come upon two white girls being chased by Apaches. They are able to save the older girl but her sister is retaken by the Apaches. Buck promises they will attempt to save her sister but everyone knows it is not feasible.

Bad Day for a ThirstBuck finds two wandering Apache boys chasing a steer. He gets Big John's approval to train them as cowhands. Skeptical locals assume they killed a rancher. After some hands are killed, the missing boys are assumed to be involved.
Tiger by the Tail

Tiger by the TailBlue finds the wounded bandit El Tigre. At the ranch they tend to his wounds and as he heals he projects the persona of a man trying to do good for his people. During a gun battle to free him, Victoria learns the truth about him.
The Peacemaker

The PeacemakerAngry at being treated like a kid, Blue leaves. He finds a job scouting for a man and adopted Apache daughter who are there on government orders to make peace with Cochise. Blue falls for the girl but Cochise has other ideas about peace.
The Hair Hunter

The Hair HunterA bounty on Apache scalps disrupts peace between the Cannons and the Indians. When Apache raids close Judah Austin's mine, he offers Stoner a bounty for Indian scalps despite John Cannon's objections. Stoner's son Chad is wounded in an attack on the Apaches and turns against his father while recuperating at the High Chaparral ranch.

A Joyful NoiseA priest, two nuns, and a young woman find Manolito who was bitten by a rattlesnake. They are hoping to build a convent on the ranch. Manolito falls in love with the woman but there is another man pursing her. However, she has other plans.
Threshold of Courage

Threshold of CourageJohn Cannon is forced to relive his final days in the Civil War by a man he disfigured in combat. Vengeful Finley Carr and his brother Stacy kidnap Victoria and head for high country, certain John will follow. Carr captures John and subjects him to physical exhaustion and hunger for three days as he prepares to reverse the roles of their first meeting. Buck, Billy Blue and Manolito force one of Carr's men to help plan a rescue.
