Bert Gramus and Rufus Butterworth were childhood chums who decided to pool their savings and purchase a diner, which they called "Bert's Place". Originally bachelor Rufus worked as a cabdriver while Bert and his wife Claudia operated the diner, but Rufus eventually quit his cabbie gig. Some of their regular customers were Hal, Andy, and Big Tom.

He gets so distraught, in fact, that his doctor tells him to get away from it all for a few days. The only way he can do that is by putting Rufus (Bob Denver) in charge of the diner, and if he is nervous with Rufus when he is there, wait and see how bad Bert gets when he's not there.
