Season 1 Reviews
TIME Magazine
Richard Zoglin
The best of the comedy crop may turn out to be NBC's The Cosby Show... The veteran comic brings his relaxed charm to the familiar domestic problems.
Washington Post
Tom Shales
The program looks at family life without preachiness or moralism but with a gently jaundiced eye that balances the absurdities and anxieties of both parents and children.
Atlanta Journal-Constitution
John Carman
The show has genuine warmth and is rare in that few TV series are centered around an unbroken family.
Arizona Republic
Bud Wilkinson
If you like Coz, you likely will like The Cosby Show. Even if you don't, the show presents an amusingly accurate view of family life.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Eric Mink
Cosby and his writers have managed to create characters -- a father, mother and several kids -- who capture and convey the genuine humor inherent in family life.
Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com
Art Chapman
It is Cosby's first TV series in eight years and it is a suitable vehicle for his re-entry.
Associated Press
Jerry Buck
Cosby has lost none of his magic and it is far and away the best new comedy of the season.
Orlando Sentinel
Noel Holston
Yes, it's sweet, but it's snappy, not sappy, and not even the competition of CBS' Magnum, P.I. should get in the way of its becoming a hit.
Minneapolis Star Tribune
Nick Coleman
After years of sitcoms with people calling each other meatballs and shouting and screaming at each other, The Cosby Show is refreshingly normal. And it's amazingly funny.
Los Angeles Times
Howard Rosenberg
This is the best comedy of the fall season by a long, long, lonnnnnng shot, restoring one of TV's most skilled comic actors and laughter to a weekly presence.
Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com
Jerry Coffey
The Cosby Show is delightful family entertainment, by far the best comedy entry of the season.
Boston Globe
Jack Thomas
This show is so warm, well-written and delightfully funny, and such a contrast to most of what's seen in prime-time, that you wonder how it got on the air. Could television be so desperate for material that it's beginning to scrape the top of the barrel?
Detroit Free Press
Mike Duffy
If cute, smarty-pants kids aren't your thing, beware. The writing is pretty decent, however. And Phylicia Ayers-Allen is nicely un-nagging and believable as Cosby's wife, a legal aid attorney.
Philadelphia Inquirer
Lee Winfrey
The great strength of the series, and what will make it go if anything does, is Cosby's sweetly marvelous way with children, the kind of rapport and close harmony that suffuse his popular Jell-0 commercials.
Philadelphia Inquirer
David Bianculli
The premise, on its own, is cleverer than most sitcoms; add the contributions by the talented cast, and The Cosby Show becomes a must-see weekly viewing event.
DVDTalk.com
Jason Bailey
Perhaps it was the characters' close proximity to real people; perhaps it was the skill with which Cosby was able to mix big laughs with real truth and subtle life lessons. But people identified with the Huxtables.
NPR
Eric Deggans
The Cosby Show rarely came off like a revolutionary situation comedy - especially because the situations, often centered on loving-yet-sardonic parents Cliff and Clair Huxtable, seemed so ordinary.
TIME Magazine
Mark Whitaker
In the sentimental glow with which it is now remembered, it's easy to forget how astonishing it was that a comedy about black people could have that kind of success.
AV Club
Joshua Alston
Of all its legacies, the one most noted when discussing The Cosby Show is its depictions of race and class. Nothing like it had been seen before on television, and nothing has had its level of impact since.
New York Times
John J. O'Connor
The difference is simply that Mr. Cosby, here at his very best, can take the ordinary and make it seem delightfully fresh. He is not just another harassed father. He is the ultimate father dealing with problems that are terribly and hilariously real.
