A respected woman in the city, Ekaterina Bashlykova, hits a man with a car, and then flees the crime scene and declares the car stolen. It is obvious to Aleksandra that Bashlykova herself is to blame for the hit-and-run, but she has no evidence, and besides, the public is coming to the suspect's defense. Having barely begun her work duties, Aleksandra finds herself at a dead end.
