Fishing with handlines was a common practice during the Depression, and Tom Hawkins was the last, and the best, of the the Gibsons handliners. How he's a fugitive from the old-folk's home where his mercenary sister Hetty keeps him virtually a prisoner. Tom enlists the help of Nick and the Reach family to escape his sister's clutches and return to the life he loves on the sea.
