A reality show contest where sixteen or more castaways split between two or more “Tribes” are taken to a remote isolated location and are forced to live off the land with meager supplies for roughly 39 days. Frequent physical challenges are used to pit the tribes against each other for rewards, such as food or luxuries, or for “Immunity”, forcing the other tribe to attend “Tribal Council”, where they must vote off one of their players.

- maximusJuly 8, 2025Fascinating game show that reveals human nature and teaches raw social lessons through the trial and error of contestants plotting and scheming their way to the end. It's funny how the people who you think "deserve to win" aren't necessarily the honest ones. A must-watch for those interested in human sociology or psychology. Seasons 1-10: These were formative games which set the stage for the series. It starts with clean games centered around honesty and loyalty. The host is careful to be neutral, allowing the players to set the stage of the game in terms of strategy and ethics. The contestants build on each previous season with slightly new social tactics, and soon the games begin to devolve into the backstabbing menagerie you expect them to be. Seasons 11-20: As the games continued, each round pushed the boundaries of trust, forcing the contestants to pick a method of gameplay - pure honest gameplay, or underhanded scheming. You can see the clear conflict in ethical approach among the contestants throughout these seasons. Tensions ramp up every season, with 19 & 20 featuring a specific player whose cunning forced the overall social strategy of gameplay several steps ahead of itself. If you're looking for examples of "classic Survivor", this is the era to pull from. Seasons 21-30: This is the height of the series, capitalizing on the new ethical paradigm solidified in seasons 19 & 20. They're arguably some of the most intense and difficult social games due to the precedents set by past seasons. Seasons 31-40: As gameplay slowly becomes stale, the show tries to shake it up with new themes to mess with the contestants heads. These seasons are marred by contrived psychologically restrictive social themes which few players are able to rise above. From season 33 onward the show is hosted in the same location. They made a decision here to discontinue hosting in different exotic locations, instead landing on Fiji - the Mamanuca Islands specifically - as a permanent home for the show. Seasons 41+: From here on out the series is nothing like it once was, now 33% shorter in length of time on the islands and starting with 20% fewer contestants. It appears the contest has cut out several of its days which were solely devoted to the contestants just surviving at camp, increasing the frequency of team mix-ups and significantly increasing the pace of the games, while diminishing a core aspect of how time and hunger pit teammates against each other at camp. It may appear to the audience at this stage that the players are not starving, at least not as much as previously.
