Midvale Ratings & Reviews
Geeks of Color
Stephanie Holland
Midvale was a really nice exploration of the sisters' devotion to one another and the evolution of their relationship. It was a nice break from exploding buildings and tormented villains.
TV Fanatic
Stacy Glanzman
The bond between Alex and Kara has always been the most compelling aspect of the series. Their relationship is the centerpiece, and on Supergirl Season 3 Episode 6 we learned just how it came to be.
Tell-Tale TV
Samantha Coley
Aside from a few minor critiques, "Midvale" is one of the best Supergirl episodes in a long time.

Maybe this is old-school thinking, but when I sit down to watch a superhero show... I do not need sisterly drama. It was like watching a live-action retelling of a Nancy Drew book. It was sappy and saccharine and not at all what I want.

It was remarkably entertaining despite the absence of nearly all the show's regulars and with a superpowered teenage lead in a rural Vancouver-like locale that you wouldn't be remiss if you mistook it for an exceptional Smallville sequel.
IGN Movies
Jesse Schedeen
If nothing else, Supergirl has found a solid pair of actresses to portray the teenage versions of Alex and Kara. Unfortunately, it didn't make great use of them in this pointless, drawn-out flashback episode.

Before we move on, please join me in LOSING YOUR MIND over how well cast young Kara (Izabela Vidovic) and young Alex (Olivia Nikkanen) are, from looks to voice to acting. Incredible work, Supergirl!

I don't know why Kara thinks being Kryptonian means a life without love -- familial, romantic, and platonic --but it sounds like Kara is trying to take away the very thing that makes Supergirl, both the woman and the show, strong: her heart.

I can't help but wonder how much the unprofessional conditions of the writer's room contributed to the show's disjointed plotting and muddled characterization. In short, as upsetting as it may be, this is only a good thing.
Birth.Movies.Death.

Amidst the poorly executed episode are a couple of solid conversations.
AV Club
Caroline Siede
I think teenage Kara's identity issues could have been more powerfully explored if this episode weren't stuck completely in the past.

Valerie Anne Liston
It's so hard to watch, Alex yelling at Kara. But I totally understand it.
Lyles' Movie Files
Jeffrey Lyles
Midvale departed from the regular Supergirl format and made a heck of a pitch for a Supergirl: The Early Years spin-off.
