- Cello, GoodbyeE3
Cello, GoodbyeIn the lobby of a Bonn concert hall, a display case holds part of the original manuscript for Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The evening's entertainment is ruined when a vandal smashes the case and sets fire to its contents before escaping through an open window in one of the dressing rooms. In London a few days later, "private investigator" Grant Logan is delighted when Christina Samone, an old girlfriend, turns up one day in need of his help. Her very rare Guarneri cello has been stolen- and it's worth a quarter of a million dollars. Grant and his 13-year old partner Ripley - the real brains behind the detective duo - take up the challenge although Grant is more interested in re-lighting an old flame than in investigating the mysterious theft. Their line of inquiry takes them to the London Symphony auditions where Grant's unspeakable violin playing creates enough of a diversion for Rip to steal the list of names for the maestro Slavinski's forthcoming cello auditions. Somewhere on that list could be a jealous rival, out to damage Christina's chances of success. The first cellist they visit has a Guarneri in his room. Despite Rip's protestations, a heavily disguised Grant gains access and makes off with the instrument only to break its neck as he goes. Back at Christina's room, Rip and Grant are appalled to discover that her cello has just been found in a rubbish bin and returned to her. Rip hastens to return the broken Guarneri to its distraught owner but picks up an unexpected lead when he does so. He pockets a program from the recent Bonn Summer Festival which he finds tucked in the cello's case. He realizes that four of the cellists invited to audition for Slavinski were also present at the Bonn Festival. Despite the return of Christina's cello, Rip suspects that something sinister is going on in the musical world. With a mystified and muddled Grant in tow, Rip continues to work his way through the list of cellists. Two cellos later, his theories are confirmed. With a flourish, he tears back the lining of Christina's cello case to reveal ... the missing Beethoven manuscript. While in Bonn, the thief had not destroyed the priceless pages but had tried to leave the building with the original. Fearing capture, he had hidden the manuscript inside one of several Guarneri cello cases and has been seeking the right case ever since. It only remains to unmask the villain and young Rip has of course long-since figured out the thief's identity. He and Grant accompany Christina to her audition for Slavinski where Rip's carefully stage-managed scheme spotlights the guilty party. - Detectives in TrainingE4
Detectives in TrainingGrant Logan and his detective agency partner, 13-year old Ripley Hilliard, are drawn into one of the last, great unsolved mysteries of the twentieth century when Gordon Dubelko, head of skyline Pictures, hires Grant. He wants him to find Sammy Backlin, the author of a book about a thirty-year old train robbery so that Dubelko wants to buy the movie tights. Rip, the real mastermind behind the detective duo, is immediately intrigued. The robbery on board the Goldrail Express is a famous case in which a stash of golf went missing and has never been found although two men were jailed for the theft. Backlin has named the third man who knows where the money is hidden and a number of people will now be on Backlin's trail. Outraged and humiliated at Dubelko's failure to cast him in one of his movies, Logan is persuaded by Rip to swallow his pride. Perhaps Dubelko will be grateful enough to offer him a film role afterward. At Backlin's house the duo encounter two thugs on the same trail and Logan emerges the worse for wear. The following day, when Grant turns up to a real audition for a new film, he is intercepted by another two bully boys an d beaten up. When Rip manages to track down Backlin on a fishing trip, he finds he has led someone else right to their target. The two men who went to prison for the robbery are out and they are also looking for the gold. Rip and Grant save Backlin from kidnap and the author confirms Rip's intuition that the revelations in the book are all false - Backlin has discovered only that the third man is dead and that the golden trail has gone cold. Grant has had enough and storms off but later finds Backlin hiding from his assailants in Grant's flat. Meanwhile Rip has been hard at work doing what he does best - analyzing the facts - and has come up with an answer. He leads Grant and Backlin to the Goldenrail Express itself, now a museum exhibit, and proudly reveals where the gold has been for thirty years. But they are not alone in the museum and more than one person is there to lay claim to the treasure. - The Wrath of RhamE5

That town is Hatchet - onion capital of England - a tourist trap until the monster from the deep began rising from its slimy lair. According to local legend, the Morlwagget is incensed by Maisie and Daisie, identical twin daughters of Gus Skillen. Gus, who owns the local pub, was making a good living with his ice cream van and boat hire business - that is, until the Morlwagget appeared to frighten the tourists away. With business bad and his own family in the firing line, Gus hires Grant to rid the town of its terrible curse by proving the Morlwagget doesn't exist. But Rip managers to do just the opposite - he tempts the hideous beast out of its lair and captures it on camera - much to the delight of Mrs. Nightingale, a sprightly 60-year old with a life-long ambition to see the Morlwagget for herself. Cashing in on Rip's success, Grant takes the credit for finding the Morlwagget and is delighted to sell his story to a national newspaper - until furious reporter Rosie Roberts finds out that the photo is a fake! Determined to get even, she delivers an ultimatum: either Logan must pay back the money he earned - impossible - or he must prove that the Morlwagget is real. Rip must use all his cunning and come up with a scheme to frame the monster and get his partner off the hook - all is takes is for Grant to don the Morlwagget costume for the most beastly performance of his career to date ...
