A young lady, Elizabeth Baker, comes to Baker Street. She seeks protection from Sherlock Holmes. Elizabeth fears that she may be another victim of a maniac, operating in London. Four beautiful girls had already died from the hand of an unknown man one after another. Sherlock Holmes has time to detain the killer. It turns out to be Mr. Calway - an unremarkable man in the street, whose only weakness is the game of cards. On the day Calway must be hanged, Holmes wonders: why Miss Elizabeth's parents were not in the courtroom? This circumstance seems suspicious to him.
