The Bavarian Lukas Schantl sells his farm to the North German biogeneticist Dr. Knut Jansens. He hires some asylum seekers and ex-prisoner Kalle Grossmann to help. These circumstances do not suit Lukas ’family - Elvira, Georg, Paul and Katharina - at first, but at least Katharina can get used to the situation just enough over time to marry Knut.
