John Mulaney and David Byrne Ratings & Reviews
Entertainment Weekly
Andy Hoglund
Mulaney emceeing things always seems to bring a special energy to our dogged institution. Maybe that's because he's stockpiled old, rejected sketches that conjure up the show's third "Golden Era" from the late aughts.
New York Magazine/Vulture
Matthew Love
Once again, the musical sketch on Mulaney's night is a showstopper. Yeah, the sheer volume of LaGuardia gripes could be overwhelming -- but they're wrapped in such a delightful package, and the format hasn't lost its charm.
indieWire
LaToya Ferguson
At least David Byrne (and Jake Gyllenhaal) performed. That does a lot of heavy lifting here. Mulaney's general comedic timing also does a lot of that too; it's just that the material is noticeably weaker than it's been his last two times as host.
Pajiba
Dustin Rowles
All in all, a pretty good opener that begins a theme tonight of skits starting out small and growing exponentially.
Rolling Stone
Ryan McGee
Luckily, the third time was the charm for Mulaney, whose evolution hosting the show matches that of his stand-up career.
Guardian
Zach Vasquez
Mulaney is as reliable a host as the show has these days... Combined with Byrne's fabulous interludes, this episode stands alongside Driver and Eddie Murphy as the best of the season so far.
AV Club
Dennis Perkins
If your third SNL hosting gig is your weakest yet and is still consistently funny, well, you're probably John Mulaney.
Slashfilm
Ethan Anderton
Mulaney himself isn't always great when it comes to characters, but this particular episode featured the comedian at his best, including another outstanding stand-up monologue.
The Atlantic
David Sims
It was the best Saturday Night Live has been this season, and further evidence that Mulaney's presence inspires some of the oddest and most ambitious sketch writing from the current staff.
Decider
Larry Getlen
John Mulaney is incapable of hosting a bad episode of Saturday Night Live, and this week's episode was no exception, with Mulaney shining in new sketches and a returning favorite (of sorts).
Vanity Fair
Karen Valby
This was a night to bask in the majesty of Mulaney and the outrageous beauty of musical guest David Byrne.
