JJ Watt and Luke Combs Ratings & Reviews

I like J.J. Watt a lot. He's a great NFL player (and probably the first defensive player to ever host SNL) and a spectacular human being. Sadly, he's not a great comedian, though he gives it the old college try.

Thus ends a very Blue Collar Comedy episode. Far be it from me to fault the show for trying something different but it all felt very pandering, the writers and Watt way out of their depth.

A somewhat subdued Saturday Night Live; some laughs here and there but nothing you'll want to re-watch.
Rolling Stone
Ryan McGee
Well, hopefully the Super Bowl will be more entertaining than this week's Saturday Night Live.
Slashfilm

The polar opposite of last weekend's return from the holiday hiatus. Instead of getting an almost entirely fantastic episode of SNL with an experienced, outstanding host, we get a mostly mediocre episode with an awkward, stilted, and inexperienced host.
New York Magazine/Vulture

Give this to the SNL writers: They stayed on topic. When J.J. Watt didn't play himself, he played a footballer, a lunkhead, or a lunkhead footballer. And Watt tried, damn it, he tried.

Not only did he actually seem comfortable onstage - even in moments where he stumbled a little - he never seemed like he was phoning it in. For an athlete host, it's definitely enough to warrant a return in the future.
AV Club
Dennis Perkins
Throwing Watt (and countrified musical guest Luke Combs) out there as red meat to the pre-Super Bowl weekend audience, SNL did its usual number on a non-actor host, playing to Watt's strengths.
Entertainment Weekly
Andy Hoglund
Lots of bad stuff to parse here, friends. I can't - it's like an MSNBC Mad Lib.
