This is a great combination of drama and detailed, graphic depictions of combat in the First World War. The three episodes are gritty and gripping. While the visual medium does not do full justice for the best written accounts, these episodes are excellent visual "fillers" to written accounts. The technical recreations of uniforms and equipment are very good and the intensity of combat is visceral to say the least. You can argue about the details (e.g., the statement at the end of episode one which states that the Battle of Mons was a humiliation—I vehemently disagree), these recreations of combat (and its aftermath) are a step in the right direction of placing the First World War in the context of Twentieth-Century history.
