Created by Richard Levinson and William Link and developed by executive producer Bruce Geller, the title character, Joe Mannix, is a private investigator. He is played by Mike Connors. Mannix was the last series produced by Desilu Productions.

Dietz was idolized by a local violent gang of juvenile thugs, the Nomads, who terrorize local business owners. The gang leaders decide to kill Mannix in revenge and as an initiation rite for a new member, whose late policeman father's memory has been unfairly tarnished.
