"Lost in Space" comes roaring back from the depths of nostalgia with a fresh coat of CGI paint and a cast that’s as eager to bond as it is to bicker. At first glance, it seems to be an ambitious attempt at reviving a classic, but as you dive deeper, you realize that while the show might be lost in space, its political commentary gets hopelessly stranded on Earth. The Robinson family, a group thrown into chaos after their crash on an alien planet, certainly has their share of ups and downs. However, moments of genuine excitement are often muddled by clunky political inputs that feel shoehorned in rather than organically integrated. An over-bearing pushy wife loaded with toxic femininity belittles and emasculates the husband/father head of the family. Add in a daughter of color into a Caucasian family as a DEI hire. It's as if the writers were navigating the cosmos with one hand on the steering wheel and the other clumsily fumbling around for a remote control for a social commentary show that wasn't even on the same channel. The thematic intent behind it sometimes shines through, but more often than not, it drags down the adventure with clunky dialogue and awkwardly articulated viewpoints that fail to resonate. Dr. Smith traditionally a male coward with maniacal bent is replaced by a woman adding to the push of politics again lessening the male percentage of the cast. The characters, while trying to portray relatable family dynamics, often seem to exist in caricature rather than reality. The show's attempts to delve into issues like climate change, societal collapse, and technology's grip on humanity come off as preachy and didactic, pulling you out of the thrilling escapades in favor of a lecture you didn’t sign up for. It’s as though every interaction feels like a setup for a moral lesson rather than genuine emotional development, leaving viewers wanting more of the entertaining drama and less of the overwrought political messaging. Visually, "Lost in Space" isn't shy about showing off its budget. The alien landscapes and intricate robot designs are undoubtedly eye-catching, but they occasionally distract from the story itself. Many scenes feel like they were crafted to dazzle the audience rather than to enrich the narrative. This sensory overload could leave you wondering whether the expense was worth it when the storytelling feels so inconsistent. Ultimately, "Lost in Space" offers an adventure laden with potential but is often bogged down by its own political ambitions. For those looking for a space-faring thrill ride, it suffers from a case of "too many ideas, not enough space." It’s a show that will leave you yearning for the simplicity and charm of the original while grappling with the complexities of a narrative that just can’t find its footing among the stars. Entertainment should be presented to entertain rather than force a political agenda for the throats of hapless victims who were fans of the original TV series.
