Tokarev is the captain of a fire-fighting brigade. A former detective, he's unofficially investigating the purchase of faulty breathing equipment that left his friend crippled. The trail leads to a businessman called Kolosov, who's also a former friend of Tokarev. His company supplies the equipment to the whole country. But Kolosov is killed, and his wife is the main suspect. Shortly before his death, Kolosov called in a favour to get his son Denis assigned to Tokarev's brigade. Now, Tokarev and Denis have to solve the mystery of Kolosov's death.
