Duncan Proctor, who had leapt out of a window to his death several weeks earlier, was subsequently seen committing the murder of his ex-girlfriend. The disappearance of three tapes from an answering machine intrigues Jonathan, especially when one is found in the manor house's cesspool. Things get complicated when he finds that none of the area funeral parlors handled the body.
