The story is set in the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where workers are demanding a 7.5 cents an hour raise. The factory superintendent, Sid Sorokin, falls in love with the head of the union grievance committee, Babe Williams, but their romance is threatened by the ongoing labor dispute.
