Season 9 Reviews
AV Club
Dennis Perkins
Sustaining such a satirical balancing act for eight years should earn creators Rob McElhenney and Glenn Howerton (and their co-stars) a place in the comedy pantheon.
HitFix
Alan Sepinwall
"Flowers for Charlie" felt very much like an "Always Sunny" episode, by way of "Flowers for Algernon." Now, it also happened to be a very funny latter-day episode.
Bloomberg News
Greg Evans
On par -- or at least within sight -- of 'Sunny's' glory days, before in-jokes and constant recycling set in.
ScreenCrush
Damon Houx
There's a fear that the show has run out of gas, but this was a strong return that promises a good year ahead.
Slant Magazine
Mike Lechevallier
[The cast's] neurotic efforts to scheme their way to happiness, fame, and fortune continue to coincide with skewed views on a variety of real-world issues that blend well with the show's onslaught of crude, scattershot humor.
People Magazine
Tom Gliatto
Driven by needs and emotions that are grubbily petty, ugly and selfish, it also happens to be delightfully funny: Even the meanest forms of humanity can jerk you into unexpected fits of laughter.
Orange County Register
Michael Hewitt
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia begins its ninth season in surprisingly strong shape, still finding ways to twist our expectations for low-brow comedy by sneaking a consistently intelligent point-of-view into the scripts without anyone noticing.
TheWrap
Tim Molloy
Becoming the big dog hasn't cost Sunny its bite. It's only gotten meaner and funnier.
The Loop
Emily Gagne
The jokes are mean-spirited, and the characters are horrendous, and you love them unconditionally because of it.
HollywoodChicago.com
Brian Tallerico
Sunny is back and, while maybe not as strong as the show's peak, it's at least as funny as last season and maybe even smarter.
Slate
Mark Peters
It's Always Sunny is gross, negative, trashy, and proud of it. And Olson's performance is -- brilliantly -- all over the place.
TV Equals
Mark Trammell
It may not be everyone's cup of tea, for sure, but you gotta admire the chutzpa, at the very least. Well played, Sunny. Well played, indeed.
CinemaBlend
Mack Rawden
It's almost comforting in a way. The world might change, but the basic personalities of these schemers, cutthroats and loveable villains never do. They're outlandish. They're mean-spirited, and they're still really damn funny.
TV Guide
Matt Roush
Sunny... gets its ninth season off to a strong start with a typically perverse episode.
Den of Geek
Chris Longo
They emphatically turned a [premiere] with few laughs into a jaw dropper in the final minutes.
Boston Herald
Mark A. Perigard
Sunny is now in its ninth season, but is not showing its age.
Columbus Alive
Columbus Alive Staff
This season's early episodes do their job by offering up what the fans want --The Gang doing horrible things and acting crazy... Who knows how long "It's Always Sunny" will run, but its legacy is strong and doesn't show signs of lessening.
IGN Movies
Matt Fowler
Ah, welcome back Always Sunny. You might be hit or miss, and getting a bit long in the tooth, but there's just something so refreshing about re-entering your world of constant cruelty and tasteless tomfoolery.
We Got This Covered
Alexander Lowe
The season nine premiere was fairly average by It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia standards, but still great when compared with the rest of television comedy.
The New Yorker
Emily Nussbaum
Binge-watch episodes, and a gonzo compassion begins to seep up through the filthy surface.
