The writing is of a very high standard indeed - you must concerntrate very hard to miss all the clues not to mention the umpteenth twist & turn during the last half of hour of each episode ! The special guest stars such as Peggy Mount , Robert Hardy , Anna Massey , Sir John Giulgud , Sean Bean , Jim Broadbent , Ian McDiarmand , Diane Fletcher , Zoe Wanamaker , Richard Briers , Richard Griffiths , Liz Hurley , Barbara Flynn and Michael Kitchen are outstanding in terms of the power that they bring to their performances . Their inclusion is fully merited and if you love that great City that is Oxford then it is a joy to see it on screen as it were . Fans of superb TV drama owe the ever first class Colin Dexter a great debt of gratitude .
