Gay Stockholm bachelor hairdresser Lasse Hellström feels him being Nina Finndal's perfect backup buddy became an excuse for her to avoid living fully and accepts in her place an invitation from her sister to attend the birthday party of their father, grumpy bigot retired admiral Carl Finndal, who wouldn't even ask her. Nina's art gallery is about to go bust and she was to stubbornly proud to ask a loan at home, so Lasse forced her hand, accepting to pose as her fiance but at the dinner table she backs down instead. Shocked, he pretends they already picked a wedding date. The web of lies is bound to unravel, despite the admiral getting fond of Lasse, but they're not the only ones keeping secrets from the family.
