Chief commissioner Detlev Grün actually called the bomb squad when his student niece Lena Herzog, whom he visited on Ruhr-Universität Bochum to appease doubts about his marriage, found an abandoned sports bag in the Chinese garden girls toilet. Heldt is delighted to look into the fossil it contained, while none was reported stolen or missing. *Palaeonthology professor Habakuk, a creative has-been star, is excited it's the "Missing link" for his thesis, mammals like birds descend from dinosaurs, but it's stolen and he knocked-down during a false fire alert while he proudly presents it, after a dismissive sneer from department chief Professor Sattler, in a lecture attended only by Heldt and three students, making them the main suspects. Lena must probe the students: Daniel is Habakuk's doting assistant, Chinese guest student Hong and Vincent, disowned son of an industry captain, are found involved in trading stolen fossils and fakes, which Dr. Holle founds the 'missing link' also is. Professor Sattler is charmed by gentleman 'senior student' Grün's erudition.
