An about-grown girl who lost her family to violence is taken in by a kind farmer and his wife, who intend to adopt her. Before they can do so, the girl is spotted in town by disgraceful Phoebe Strunk and her gang of worthless sons, who assume that the pretty girl, like anything else they fancy, is theirs for the taking.
