A divorced father, he has custody of his 23-year-old slacker son Ben, who dreams of wealth and freedom but is too lazy to find a real job. Dr. Katz's receptionist is the acerbic Laura. He spends his free time in the bar "Jacky's 33" with his friends Stan and Julie, the bartender.

Fanny PackDr. Katz starts using a fanny pack to carry his personal belongings, but Ben makes fun of how it looks. Eventually, Ben ruins his fanny pack when he packs Dr. Katz's lunch in it but neglects to put the food in wrapping first.

MoviesDr. Katz and Ben become addicted to movie-going and try to break the habit by episode's end. Meanwhile, Ben pesters Laura because he noticed her on a date at the movies and wants to know if she's in a serious relationship with said guy.

TicketKatz gets a ticket for running a stop sign, despite his efforts to lighten up the cop (""That is a great color for you""). Ben asks, ""Why didn't you play with his mind?"" and suggests they contest the ticket.

Phone LuvBen becomes enamored of Cindy, a telemarketer from Telepurchase. He mistakes her powerful sales skills for actual affection, and wants to have a private conversation with her, resulting in an angrily whispered argument between him and Katz.

Chain LetterBen receives a chain letter and frets about it, despite advice from both Dr. Katz and Laura that chain letters are a huge waste of time. Meanwhile, Dr. Katz sets up a retirement fund for Laura, though she wants the money now.

Babysitting BenBen babysits neighbor Mrs. Shields's four year old son Jeffrey for an hour. Meanwhile, Laura tells Dr. Katz that someone called the office with a death threat for Katz. It turns out the individual wasn't being literal, though.

Miles AwayBen is set to visit his cousin, Sarah, in another city. However, Ben barely sees Sarah during his stay, as she's either at work or out with friends. Being alone in a big house and bored out of his mind, Ben comes home a day early.

London BroilBen points out, ""When we spend time together over breakfast: boring,"" leading to a discussion of the old games he and Katz used to play when Ben was a kid. Katz asks him to take the London broil out of the freezer, and then goes to work. When he gets home, Ben greets him with a clue -- the first in a series of 54 -- for a game of Treasure Hunt
Feng Shui

Feng ShuiBen begins rearranging the furniture in the apartment after picking up a book on Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese philosophy that teaches believers to arrange the objects in their surroundings to achieve inner peace. Dr. Katz is wary of Ben's new obsession with Feng Shui, but Laura finally finds something to talk about with Ben.

AldermanKatz is disturbed to learn that the city alderman he voted for is corrupt. He talks about what HE would do if he were alderman: ""I'd like to bring crime back into the streets and out of the home,"" and get rid of the ""criminal element"" (Ben: ""Criminal element? What, are you Batman?""). Ben immediately begins being his dad's campaign manager, despite Katz's insistence that he is NOT running. (Ben's platform: handicap parking for everyone.) He makes signs and harasses Laura, inviting her over to help with the ""campaign"" (he tells her he used air quotes on the word ""campaign"").
Paranoia

ParanoiaDr. Katz and Ben think someone is trying to break into their apartment in the middle of the night. The next day, they put new locks on the door and bars on the windows. Eventually, they realize they're living in fear and stop being paranoid.
Waltz

WaltzDr. Katz realizes he'll have to dance at his niece's Rachel's wedding, and he can't dance. Katz asks Laura if she'll help him learn how to waltz, and once he pays her $200 and agrees not to touch her, she accepts. Meanwhile, Ben tries to help as well by renting Katz some instructional tapes on how to waltz, but is annoyed when Katz says he already learned how to waltz from Laura.
Anniversary

AnniversaryDr. Katz tells Ben that his 25th wedding anniversary is coming up. Ben realizes that he's 25 himself, and concludes he must've been born out of wedlock. Dr. Katz reassures him that he meant it was his 26th anniversary.
