The PS4 was developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, formerly Sony Computer Entertainment. The system launched in November world wide, besides in Japan, where it released in February 2014. It competes with Nintendo's Wii U and Microsoft's Xbox One, though the PlayStation 4 has had the most positive reception of the three consoles. Heightened demand for the PS4 helped Sony top global console sales, with more than 40 million consoles have been sold worldwide as of May 22, 2016.
